Two Weeks To Go
If you have decided to do your own packing start at least two weeks before your move date. It will take longer than you think it will. Boxes should be labelled with the details of their contents as well as the room they have got to be stored at your new home.
Pack heavy objects lighter ones but do not overstrain the boxes because this will lead to breakages and possible accidents. Give away or throw away items you do longer need. They will only cause a headache on move day. You could also take them to your local charity shop.
One Week To Go
Inform your utility companies of the imminent change of address. Electricity, gas and water all require at least 48 hours notice to ensure a smooth transfer.
If you have young children why not arrange child care for the day of your move. Moving is stressful. You will be glad you did. This applies to pets too.
One Day To Go
Pack a bag with a change of clothes and toiletries. Also include essentials like light bulbs and toilet rolls and perhaps candles for use at your new home. Keep a note of all important telephone numbers you might need.
Empty and defrost your fridge and freezer. Plan some refreshments for the next day. You do not want to be searching for them on moving day. Easy access to a kettle may be a good idea. Keep it simple with crisps, biscuits, cakes and maybe make some sandwiches. Remember your cooker may be disconnected at your new home.
Moving Day
As soon as possible on the day settle children and pets with their carers.
Stay calm and focus on emptying your home systematically. Once the van or lorry has been loaded, walk around the house to make sure everything has been taken.
